How Often Should You Service Your Transmission?
Transmission service intervals vary by vehicle and driving conditions. General guidelines:
- Normal driving conditions: every 60,000-100,000 miles
- Severe conditions (towing, hauling, city driving, dusty roads, extreme temperatures): every 30,000-60,000 miles
- Diesel trucks that tow: every 30,000-50,000 miles — heavy loads generate heat that breaks down fluid faster
- CVT transmissions: every 30,000-60,000 miles — CVTs are more sensitive to old fluid than traditional automatics
The old myth that transmissions are “sealed for life” is dangerous. Check your owner’s manual — most manufacturers now recommend transmission service at specific intervals.
Allison Transmission Service (Duramax Diesel)
The Allison 1000 in Duramax-powered Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra HD trucks is one of the toughest transmissions ever put in a pickup — but it still needs proper service. Ignore it and you’re looking at thousands of dollars in replacement costs. Service it every 30,000-50,000 miles (sooner if you tow) and it can last 300,000 miles or more. We specialize in Allison service, including:
- Complete fluid and filter service using Dexron VI or Allison TES-295 fluid
- Solenoid replacement for shift quality issues

68RFE and Aisin Transmission Service (Ram Cummins)
Ram trucks with the 6.7L Cummins came with either the 68RFE (a Chrysler-built automatic) or the Aisin AS69RC (a Japanese-built heavy-duty automatic). Both are excellent transmissions, but they have very different service requirements:
- 68RFE — prone to torque converter and valve body issues if not serviced regularly. We recommend service every 30,000-50,000 miles.
- Aisin — heavy-duty and highly durable, but the fluid still needs changing. Service every 60,000 miles with the correct spec fluid.
Ford Powerstroke Transmission Service
Ford Powerstroke trucks use several transmissions depending on year:
- 5R110 TorqShift — 2003-2010 6.0L and 6.4L Powerstrokes
- 6R140 TorqShift — 2011-2019 6.7L Powerstroke
- 10R140 — 2020+ 6.7L Powerstroke
